The First Day in Scotland

We left London today and headed north via high speed train from London to Edinburgh.  Going by train was a great way to travel, especially since we had first class tickets (kids traveled free with first class tickets and we had two meals included, so it was about the same cost).

After trying to get to Hogwarts via Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross, we were on our way.

Sitting together at the table was a fun way to travel, as long as I didn't have to ride backwards.

Abby enjoying her train ride, snack and her tablet for reading and games.

We also had a few good rounds of Exploding Kittens.  (Have you played this game yet?  Thanks to Matt at the Toy Store in Quincy for introducing us to the game.  So much fun, an so simple!)

I thought this was a good sign, right next to our hotel, The Scottish Episcopal Church Welcomes You.

After dropping off our luggage at the hotel, we walked up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle.  We didn't spring for the audio guide, and in an effort to learn about the castle, I suggested I be our group's audio guide and read aloud from the guidebook we purchased.  That didn't go over too well or last too long.  They did have a free kids fact finding mission which gave some purpose to looking around the castle for the kids.
We left the castle and found out way to a pub and enjoyed pints (don't worry, that's Sprite for the kids).  We ended up in a different pub for dinner, and on retrospect should have just stayed at this one.  However, the next one did have this delicious treat:

Fried Mars Bars.  Yep, that's right.  Matt said it tasted like the fair.  It really was quite delicious and I had no idea this was a Scottish thing.  It was worth the subpar fish and chips I had (and the inedible Bangers and Mash Emily had) for this dessert.

And now as we are back in our hotel room, kids sleeping, I'm putting together a Scotland playlist.  So far:
Outlander- Main Title Theme
Touch the Sky (from Brave)
Lock Lomond- Whiffenpoofs Yale
Amazing Grace

Matt added the following:
Loch Lomond- Rosalind McAllister
Greensleeves
Scarborough Fair
Scotland the Brave
Skye Boat Song
Auld Lang Syne

The Journey Home

We were sad to leave London, and especially Aunt Emily, but also looking forward to being home.  After the 11 + hour flight, we made it to ...
